DIE FLEDERMAUS Johann Strauss II Premiered in 1874 Vienna and popular ever since, this lively operetta derives its story line from a French vaudeville play staged two years earlier, in turn loosely based on an 1851 German farce by Benedix. It is set in Vienna. Everyone comes to the Prince's glorious ball in Act 2; the mood in Act 3, at the prison, is only slightly less scandalous. program sponsored by Julia Rank Joanne McArthur October 24
CARMINA BURANA with David Stones and Kelly Walker Carl Orff Composer and educator Carl Orff first encountered the 13th-century Carmina Burana (or Songs of Beuren) in 1934, in their English translations. The originals (in Latin, German, and mediaeval French) were probably connected with an Austrian Abbey. From over 1,000 songs, Orff chose 24 for his 1937 'scenic cantata'. Poet David Stones and singer-songwriter Kelly Walker will provide a contemporary response to Carl Orff’s exploration of love, lust, longing and loss. program sponsored by Jim MacDougall and also by Maggie Woodley in memory of Connie MacDougall, a passionate lover of music and opera and a great friend and admirer of Kelly Walker October 31
SACRIFICIUM: CASTRATI ARIAS Recorded performances by Cecilia Bartoli Cecilia Bartoli has committed considerable time and energy in recent years to reviving and performing the lost repertoire of the early 18th century Italian castrati, wonderfully virtuosic music to which she brings the entire range of her own vocal artistry. program sponsored by Mark Beckett November 7 (part 1) & 14 (part 2)
L'INCORONAZIONE DI POPPEA Claudio Monteverdi This was Monteverdi's last opera – first performed in 1643 in Venice, revived in 1651 in Naples, then lost for over 200 years.
