RUSALKA
The theme of Isolation is expressed profoundly in our first opera, Rusalka by Czech composer Antonín Dvořák. A water nymph longs to become human so she can experience love with the Prince. Her wish is fulfilled, but her transformation leaves her unable to speak to her beloved, who cannot understand why she is always silent. She becomes isolated from him, and then even from her own kind, left at last to wander in her watery prison.

October 29 (part 1) & November 5 (part 2)
RIGOLETTO
In Rigoletto by Giuseppe Verdi a court jester’s physical deformity, along with the nature of his profession, isolate him both socially and emotionally. His resulting bitterness and desire for revenge further alienate him from everyone around him.

ROMÉO et JULIETTE
BALLET and OPERA EXCERPTS
Sergei Prokofiev      Charles Gounod
In Roméo et Juliette the forbidden love between Romeo and Juliet acts as a powerful source of isolation, as it forces them to hide their relationship. That eventually leads to terrible miscommunication and ultimately to their deaths.
