George Frideric Handel

​We begin with a DVD presentation of Giulio Cesare, an Italian opera by the German / English composer George Frideric Handel. It tells the story of Julius Caesar
(101 BC – 44 BC) and his relationship with Cleopatra and her brother Ptolemy. This Baroque opera, full of gorgeous singing, is set in a Middle-Eastern international hotel; our presentation is directed by the unique Peter Sellars.

REQUIEM 9/11
Giuseppe Verdi

Requiem 9/11 is a personal artistic response by Stratford’s late director and choreographer Brian Macdonald to the destruction of the twin towers in New York, set to Verdi’s Requiem.
Annette av Paul, Brian’s partner and muse, will be with us to introduce the work.

Giuseppe Verdi

We finish our series with the ever- popular Aida, by the operatic genius, Giuseppe Verdi.
Aida was commissioned for the opening of the Suez Canal in 1871 and was premiered in Cairo. The story involves revenge, sacrifice and a love triangle.
