Franz Joseph Haydn
The Creation is one of Haydn's masterpieces, a large-scale oratorio describing the divine creation of the world. The text is based on Genesis, The Book of Psalms, and Milton's Paradise Lost. Haydn drew inspiration from the oratorios of Handel that he heard in England in the 1790s.

Composed in 1953 to celebrate the coronation of Queen Elizabeth II, Gloriana has a libretto based on Lytton Strachey's book about the relationship between Elizabeth I and the Earl of Essex, called Elizabeth and Essex: A Tragic History .

Puccini’s final opera (unfinished at his death in 1924) is far and away his most musically adventurous. Its fairy-tale-like story can be traced back to a twelfth-century story by the Persian poet Nazami.
